Steph’s Smitten List: ‘Advanced Style’ Trailer, Crock Pot Meals, Baskets

This week, I’m positively smitten with:

1. ‘Advanced Style’ Trailer: Wait until you hear these women talk about fashion, why they wear what they wear, and what clothing, style, and fashion mean to them and how it defines them in this 2011 movie trailer. ‘Advanced Style’ — based on the blog Crystal wrote about in her Smitten List — may be a trailer for a documentary about “stylish New York older ladies”, but I could watch this four minute clip every morning just to get inspired: their colors, their fashion, their confidence, and, especially, their quotes…here are a few of my favorites: “I’m dressed up for the theatre of my life every day.” “I don’t dress for anybody else, I dress for myself.” “I have to have freedom; when I move I move.” “I’m very proud to get to this…I have just become 90 years old.” “As we get older we get better”. “Break the rules once in a while…I can wear leopard glasses.” “Young women, you’re going to be an old woman someday…don’t worry about it, don’t sweat it…every era, it builds character.” This is just magnificent!

2. Crock Pot Meals: Tis the season to break out your crock pot and let it work its magic, preparing you a warm dinner on the counter while you tend to other things! Last week I made a butternut squash soup in my crock pot, but I especially enjoy making pot roast with root vegetables or stews. Grab your crock pot this fall and try this easy beef stew recipe!

3. Baskets: I’m not sure how it happened, but in one week I bought three (inexpensive but lovely) baskets. (Thanks, Michaels and Marshall!) Each serves a different purpose, is adorable, functional, and practical, and looks pretty on display in my house. Baskets are great for fruit, clothespins, crafts, cards, magazines, and more. Let this Pinterest board inspire you!

  1. I also love the ‘Advanced Style’ trailer and its message, including the quote “there’s no substitute for life experience”. I am 53. I spent the day yesterday with two lovely ladies, one 74, one 81. They were so much fun to be with – – they had interesting stories to tell, great advice, amazing style and a genuine curiosity and respect for life and the people around them. I intend to embrace aging the way these two lovelies do. And that’s what I’m smitten with!

    • Thank you for sharing 🙂 I wrote in a separate article recently that friendships come in all ages and with variations in life experiences. We need to value our elders for their wisdom and experience, and learn from their confidence and grace!
