Crystal’s Smitten List: Bookstores, Cookie Butter, Beauty Protector

This week, I’m positively smitten with…

1. Book stores: My love of books started when I was a kid — my family would take my cousin, my brother and I to the library or to the local Border’s book store. We read like fiends for our library’s summer reading program and were delighted at the idea of each getting to spend $20 on books. It was heaven. To this day, there’s nothing quite like visiting a book store. And I don’t just love reading — I adore the books, cracking them open, collecting them, being surrounded by them (even if nowadays it’s mostly digital). I could lose myself in a bookstore for an entire day, moved by all the possibilities each one holds. I’m lucky that there’s a nearby Barnes and Noble that’s able to satiate my desire for bookstores, but my all-time favorite is Book Barn in Niantic, CT. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend checking it out; but if you can’t make it there, why not stop by another local bookstore instead?

2. Cookie butter: I just discovered cookie butter, a spreadable treat in the same vein as peanut butter or Nutella, only made from a delicious type of spiced shortcrust biscuit. I’m addicted. Seriously addicted. There are two major brands that I know of: Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter (which has more than 11,000 fans on Facebook) and Biscoff Cookie Spread (which is the type I tried!). If there is such a thing as heaven in a jar, this is it. I’m already looking up a bunch of delicious treats to bake this cookie spread into, if for no other reason than so I don’t eat it all on a spoon! Up first: cookie butter s’mores. I can’t wait.

 3. Beauty Protector: I’ve already waxed poetic about Birchbox, and my admiration is still going strong; it was that beauty/makeup service that led me to Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle, an all-in-one hair product that detangles, moisturizes, smoothes frizz, and protects against UV rays and heat. The spray — which is paraben- and sulfate-free — is so light (unlike lots of other products, which can leave your head feeling greasy), and works with most hair types. The best part? The smell! It’s incredible, and this spray has quickly become a part of my daily beauty routine.

  1. ohhh cookie butter will be my demise. I love a good bookstore as well… Powell’s in Portland is by far the biggest and best I have been too. But be prepared to spend all day in there 🙂
