This week, I’m positively smitten with…
1. Animal rescue: My baby Obi was a shelter dog, and in honor of his upcoming 2nd birthday, I’m smitten with an organization called One Picture Saves a Life. It strives to teach the employees and volunteers at local shelters how to take better photos of their animals, in hopes of increasing that animal’s chance of finding a home. It’s a simple, but completely brilliant idea — better photos lead to more adoptions. The organization has a bunch of photography tutorials for shelters to use, as well as a before/after gallery full of heart-warming success stories that juxtapose old photos of an animal with the photo that got the animal adopted. Plus, the site lists opportunities for volunteer photographers to help out locally.
2. Four-strand braids: I admit my hairstyle techniques are a bit bland, so when a co-worker showed up with a four-strand braid, I was incredibly impressed. It was beautiful to look at… and, more importantly, got me wondering how the hell she’d done it. The tutorial below details how to master the four-strange braid — so maybe I’ll finally be able to add another hairstyle to my repertoire.
3. Broad City: If you haven’t checked out Comedy Central’s new show, “Broad City,” you should. Produced by Amy Poehler, the show is about two ride-or-die BFFs named Ilana and Abbi who navigate life living in New York City. This is one of the few comedy shows that features two women as the leads and I love it; Ilana and Abby are brash, flawed, a bit raunchy, and hilarious. Bonus points: the show has been called “sneak attack feminism” by the Wall Street Journal. Yay!
