9 Ways to Feel Sophisticated | Positively Smitten

We all strive to be something, somebody, even if it’s just a {fill in the blank} version of ourselves. Wiser/Kinder/Happier/Calmer… What guides us on that journey is knowing who we are and who we want to become. The latter part is a critical factor.

I often wonder if I’m the only one who wakes up and enjoys the process of getting ready, planning my day ahead, and then leaving the house owning a certain persona. It’s kind of like I put my best foot out there to present myself to the world with all the qualities I would like to be known for. More often than not, many of those qualities can be summed up in one word: sophisticated. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the adjective can mean the following:

Having or showing a lot of experience and knowledge about the world and about culture, art, literature, etc.

Attractive to fashionable or sophisticated people

Highly developed and complex

When you Google images for sophisticated, you see a plethora of things: photos of the always elegant Audrey Hepburn, a wise-looking cartoon owl, red wine, a cat wearing glasses and reading a newspaper, lace, crystals, glamorous dresses and elaborate table settings, and great clothes and good hair. What a crazy variety, and yet they all speak to me. I’ve noticed that sophisticated people have confidence and individuality. They have poise and purpose. I often strive for sophistication so that I, too, can exude the experience, culture, and sense of calm and curiosity that I wish to show to the world. These 9 things help me feel instantly sophisticated!

1. A watch – There’s something about having the time on your arm that shows you mean business. Take it to the next level with a watch that has a lot of personality, and it becomes an extension of you.

2. Well-manicured hands – Your nails don’t have to be long or even painted, but because we use them so much throughout the day, it’s a statement about how well you take care of yourself. Follow these tips to pamper your hands.

3. Confidence – There are many types of confidence, and yours is unique to you. Confidence can be bold or it can be quiet. Knowing your natural state of confidence is a good place to be. Here are some ways to build unshakable confidence.

4. Something unique  – This could be how you wear your hair in a tight bun on the top of your head, or an heirloom piece of jewelry that makes a big statement pinned to your blouse, sophistication drips off of people who are uniquely themselves.

5. Basic but tailored clothes –  They say simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. If that’s the case, being understated in what you put on your body is all you need to strive for. Think casual and comfortable while fitted and well cut to your body. Cinching in or enhancing certain parts draws attention to your favorite areas.

6. Accessories – I love to watch people who tote great big bags or briefcases, little agenda books, or baskets carrying farmers market finds. When there’s a purpose to the luggage we carry, it is a much more acceptable load to bear.

7. Good posture – Sophisticated people stand tall and proud, they even sit tall and proud. They’re just constantly in a position that says “I’m attentive to the world around me.”

8. A smile – People who don’t just smile but who really truly wear a smile have a lot to share with the world: a story, a friendship, a word of wisdom, etc. There’s a lot behind the positive expression.

9. Reading material – Sophistication is being well-read and knowing the world around you. I think one should always have a book on hand wherever they go. Rather than whipping out an iPhone next time you’re waiting on your oil change, take out something meaningful to get lost in.
