9 Creative DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

For me, it can be kind of stressful to pick out a Halloween costume. I always want to go with something cute, but not terribly expensive (I’ll only wear it once, after all). And, unfortunately, I’m not especially gifted when it comes to sewing things myself. Cue: adorable DIY costumes that can be put together with a few random items! I may not be a great seamstress, but I am great at finding a bunch of items and putting them all together to make something fun.

Here are 9 DIY Halloween costumes that are on my radar.

#1 Gumball machine

How cute is this gumball costume?! You could easily put it together with some already-made items (like a tank top and a skirt) and all you’d have to do is get creative with the accents.

What you’ll need:

  • Red skirt
  • Spaghetti-strap top (preferably tan or white)
  • Pom poms (the mini, craft version)
  • Gray, black, white felt (to create the machine)
  • Sharpie

One of my favorite costume ideas comes from “New Girl” on Fox. Reigning Cats and Dogs is a fun take on “raining cats and dogs” and it’s relatively easy to do! You just need a crown and some stuffed animals.

What you’ll need:

  • Stuffed dogs
  • Stuffed cats
  • Crown
  • Cape

What you’ll need:

  • Robe
  • Slippers
  • Stuffed cats
  • Hair curlers
  • Makeup — lots and lots of makeup (optional)

I just about died from cute when I saw this costume. You’ve heard the phrase, “I’ve been bitten by the travel bug,” and now you can actually be the travel bug.

What you’ll need:

  • Strapless dress
  • Maps (which can be pinned on the strapless dress)
  • Pipe cleaners (for the antenna)
  • Or make it easy on yourself and buy a map skirt on Etsy
  • Travel bag (optional)

#5 Loofa

There are so many ways to go with a tooth fairy costume — all you really need is a pair of wings and a wand. So get creative!

What you need:

  • Tiara
  • Wand (affix a tooth made out of white felt on the end!)
  • Tutu (or tulle to make one yourself)
  • Dress or shirt/skirt to wear underneath
  • Wings (buy them pre-made for a couple bucks at a Halloween store or make them yourself with some cardboard, feathers, and string)
