Each month, we upload a new writing prompt on our sidebar, encouraging people to write in on the topic. May’s writing prompt is TALENT.
What skill or talent do you wish you had? What skill or talent do you already have, and how do you use it?
Here’s how our staff answered…
I sincerely wish that I was musically talented. I wish that I was one of those people who could play anything by ear. As it is I have forgotten most of what I know about playing the piano. I am signed up for lessons in the near future which may foster a talent I didn’t realize I had. One talent I do possess is the ability to make some things that surprise even me with how great they turn out. I have been gifted with the ability to be crafty, to create. I firmly believe we all have a talent, at least one, and often times we are much more talented than we realize. – Jessie
There are so many talents and skills I wish I had; I love to learn, so I try to obtain new skills when I can — but it’s not always easy! I do wish I was a talented seamstress. I’d love to someday be able to design and sew my own dresses and skirts! One skill I am proud of, though, is my ability to write. Cliche, of course, but it is a passion I’ve had since I was a little girl. I may not always be the most well-spoken person, but when it comes to writing, I feel like I’m home. – Crystal
I would love to be a culinary genius — which to me entails being able to taste individual flavors in recipes and know exactly what’s missing. Taking random ingredients and whipping them into a five star meal. On top of that, I wish I could detect the flavors in wine and then grow my own vines and sell the bottles! I’m not sure where my appreciation for good food and drink comes from, but I’d love to be talented like that! Meanwhile, I’m very proud of a talent I do have: I’m a certified fitness instructor with over six years under my belt, and I believe it could have been my full-time career if I pursued it. I don’t currently teach, but I used to feel satisfied when I’d wrap up a group exercise class and the participants felt good about themselves. I focused on teaching them to be strong and safe, have fun, think positive, and dig deeper. – Steph
When I think of skills I wish I had, a hundred things come to mind. I am constantly curious and always want to learn new things. The skill that would be most useful for me to have would be constant enthusiasm and ability to stay on task. In order to complete something (like writing a novel, for instance) I have to be constantly excited about it, if my obsession wanes so does my work and I am not good at going back and completing tasks I’ve left by the wayside. A talent I possess is being a good aim. This helps in accuracy in athletic sports (like tennis and golf) and things like archery, knife throwing, and shooting a pistol. It’s a goal to become more accurate but I am happy to have a somewhat natural ability. – Lyndsey
